Coding 101 for Kids

This course is the perfect starter course for giving your child a foundation in computer programming and is designed for kids ages 8-12.

Coding 101 for Kids

Learning to write code and program a computer is an essential skill for any student and will be required for almost all jobs in the future.  This foundational course introduces programming to your child in a fun and entertaining way.  Your child will not only learn to code but they will also learn to reason systematically, think creatively, and work collaboratively.

In this course, young students enter the world of computer science by learning how to create animations, computer games, and interactive projects. Using Scratch, a graphical programming language developed at MIT, students learn fundamental programming concepts such as variables, loops, conditional statements, and event handling. As they teach a mischievous cat to dance, explore a maze, or play games, students learn how to use math and computer code to think creatively.

The course will show students how to make and import objects, create audio recordings, and use them to develop interactive projects. Students who successfully complete the course will be prepared to study more advanced concepts in the next level course, Python Programming for Kids or Teens.

Course Length:

Runs seven (7) weeks.  Classes are 1.5 hours in length and have 1 hour of optional homework each week.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn the basics of computer programming
  • Learn to program using the MIT Scratch 2.0 Interface
  • Learn about loops, conditional statements, and event handling
  • Give your child the confidence that they can do technical things

Course Cost: $549/student

Student Prerequisites:

No previous programming skills are required, but students should be comfortable using a computer and browser, and managing files. Students are expected to be familiar with standard computer operations (e.g., login, cut & paste, email attachments, etc.). Students do not need to purchase any software or textbook, but they are required to bring their own laptop or Chromebook to the class.

Python Programming 101 for Kids & Teens

We cover all of the Python programming fundamentals in an age-appropriate way to give your child the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Python Programming 101 for Kids & Teens

Python is the most commonly used programming language in the world. Python is used in finance, health care, engineering, data analytics, bio-medicine, robotics, artificial intelligence, and many more.  Learning Python paves the way for your child to tackle problems in any field of study.

This course introduces students to the exciting world of programming using the Python language. Students will gain a basic understanding of object-oriented programming and enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they learn to design, code, and debug Python programs.

Challenging assignments encourage them to master important programming concepts such as variables, operators, and control flow constructs. Students will use their creativity and imagination to draw different shapes on the computer screen and work with Turtle Graphics. They will also discover how to use functions to reuse code and how to read and write to files.

This course will equip your child with the skills they need to succeed in school, find their dream job, and achieve their goals.

Course Length:

Runs seven (7) weeks with a two (2) hour class and one (1) hour of homework each week.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn and practice Python Syntax
  • Learn and practice Python Programming Constructs
  • Learn and practice Python Libraries
  • Learn and practice Python Troubleshooting

Runs seven (7) weeks with a two (2) hour class and one (1) hour of homework each week.

Course Objectives:

  • Introduction to data collection, cleansing, and aggregation
  • Introduction to Microsoft Power BI 
  • Introduction to data visualization
  • Introduction to basic statistics and mathematical foundations

What does STEM or S.T.E.M. stand for?

STEM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  Across the United States, STEM job growth will outpace all other job growth in the next 20 years by a three to one ratio.  Employers have massive needs for STEM skills but are hardpressed to find enough employees to fill these demanding jobs. The Smithsonian Science Institute estimated that there are 2.4 million unfilled STEM jobs in the US in 2018. According to the National Science Board the average salary for a STEM major was $78,270 compared to $34,750 for all US workers (2012 data).

Our goal is to provide high-quality, relevant classes in a physically, mentally, and emotionally safe environment for your child.

Course Fee & Refunds
The full fee for the course is charged at the time of enrollment. This insures that a seat in the course is guaranteed for the student. Refunds are granted up until 45 days prior to the course start date. If a student is registered with less than 45 days until the course start date, no refund can be granted. We do allow qualified student substitutions in cases where the planned student is unable to attend the course. This substitution must be coordinated with Olympia STEM Classes in advance of the course start date.

Instructor Responsibilities
Instructors will treat every student and parent in a kind and courteous way. Instructors will strive to tailor the material to the class in a way that maximizes the learning experience for each student in the class. Instructors will manage the class environment to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.

Student Responsibilities
Students are required to treat fellow students, instructors, and support staff in a kind and courteous way. Students also need to listen to the course instructor and attempt to follow the provided instructions. If a student becomes disruptive to the class, they may be asked to leave the class. Dismissal from a class is done at the Instructor’s discretion. If a student is dismissed from the class for disruptive behavior, no refund will be granted.

Parent & Guardian Responsibilities
Parents should ensure that their child arrives on-time and is ready to learn. Parents should also encourage their kids to learn the course material and help build their confidence.

Why have your kids learn to code?

Course Curator & Lead Instructor

Stephen Backholm

Stephen is passionate about using technology to solve business problems and educate kids on how it will change the future. Currently, he is the Director of Innovation & Technology for the Washington State Investment Board (WSIB) who oversees a $134 billion dollar investment portfolio.  At the WSIB, he is responsible for all technology operations, centralized investment data analytics, project management, and cybersecurity. He has held a number of senior IT roles in various organizations and has specialized in creating dynamic, staff-led cultures and implementing innovative technology solutions. 

He has also founded several companies including True Cedar LLC an IT Consulting firm of which he is the principal and NorthAmericaTalk, Inc a media company that deploys Community Social Networks ™.

Stephen earned a BS in computer science from Western Washington University, achieved his CISSP cybersecurity designation, and has had formal training in PMBOK, ITIL, SANS, LEAN, SCRUM, and Agile. 

Stephen is passionate about helping kids learn about technology and take the fear and mystery out of it.  

Stephen believes that every child is a genius and as a father of five, he knows that it takes different techniques and methods to develop it in each child.
